Abstract:The effect of intumescent flame retardant (IFR) composed of ammonium
polyphosphate (APP) and pentaerythritol (PER) on ABS was studied using
thermal gravimetric analysts (TGA), scanning electron microscope (SEM),
and limited oxygen index (LOI), etc. TGA analysis indicated that the
amount of charred residue at 650 °C achieved 21.3 % , which in contrast
with 1.9 % for ABS resins containing traditional halogen flame
retardants. SEM observation revealed that puffy coking charred layers
were formed by lots of closed bubbles in ABS specimen filled with IFR
after burning. When content of IFR was 30 % , an LOI value of 27. 4 %
for ABS was obtained.
