Abstract:It has been pointed out that the stability of numerical results is a crucial issue in dynamic problems of porous media in which there are voids and micro-cracks filled with fluid. Lots of previous work showed that. the interpolation function for the displacement and the pore pressure must fulfill the so-called Babuska-Brezzi stability criteria or the Zienkiewicz-Taylor patch test in the limit cases of nearly incompressible fluid and small permeability. Otherwise, the spurious numerical oscillations may appear in the pore pressure field. The criteria are not fulfilled by the finite elements with the same order of interpolation for both variables directly unless some stabilization techniques are introduced. Alternatively, this paper applies the numerical manifold method to the dynamic coupling analysis of saturated porous media. The new manifold element can handle the problem mentioned before and does not require any special stabilization techniques. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the validity and stability of the element developed.
