Abstract:This paper presents a semi-coupled thermo-mechanical friction stir welding model to investigate the material flows, equivalent plastic strains and recrystalliztion phenomenon during the friction stir welding process. The comparison of the current, semi-coupled friction stir welding model and the fully-coupled one shows that the computational cost can be reduced dramatically by the model developed in the current research. The equivalent plastic strain can correlate well with the boundaries of different welding zones. Based on this discovery, the effect of the mixture of the materials on both the advancing side and retreating side is studied. During friction stir welding process, evolution of the microstructure is dominated by the recrystallization phenomenon. So, the effect of welding parameters on recrystallization process in friction stir welding is also investigated.
