Abstract:A new approach for supporting the top-down design of product assembly draft was presented by means of a direction transformation matrix. At first, a sub-assembly unit was defined according to a basic mechanical unit, mechanism component and assembly constraint. Then, a direction transformation matrix (DTM) to describe the layout of the sub-assembly was set up according to the motion direction between input and output terminals. A given system DTM can be decomposed into an ordered sequence of sub-DTMs. Combined with solid modeling software (Solidworks), an algorithm was proposed to show the layout and 3-D visualization of the possible solutions in conceptual design. At last, an example is given to show feasibility and validity of the approach.
