Abstract:The proposed process includes the following procedures. First, a digital model must be created, and be stored in an appropriate file format. Second, the digital model must be sliced to get the section data of each layer, which includes the information of its geometry and its surfce color. This can be done using a voxelization slicing method. Third, in order to assure not baring the uncolored interior of a surface colored model after "subtractive" post processing, the colored regions in the slicing result should be thickened. A method based on the principle of Mathematical Morphology is suited for this purpose, which is both rapid and robust. Fourth, to color a full color model using a device which directly supports only a few color levels, a 3D halftoning method should be adopted. A good choice is a method based on subdivision, which is of small quantizing error, especially in the border regions, and can produce good halftoning results with some randomness to avoid layering effect. Some test results were presented, which demonstrate the applicability of the proposed process.
