Abstract:This paper uses a standard benchmark part, which contains 22 dimensional, geometrical and surface roughness features, to conduct process parameter optimization of FDM. An orthogonal test which has the characteristic of the least experimental runs has been employed by means of orthogonal test design techniques, detailed measurements for 27 prototypes are then taken using a 3-D coordinate measurement machine and surface coarseness profiling instruments. These measurement data are dealt with by using MATLAB software and the results can be used to evaluate the quality of FDM prototypes. So the functional relationships between the input process parameters and output prototype quality are found, and the process parameter optimization is carried out. The results indicate that the optimal setup of process parameters can evidently improve the quality of FDM prototypes.
