Abstract:With the patent thicket being an important organizational form of patents, which is created by clusters of patents, the identification of patent thickets is becoming an urgent task. There are complex citations of patents in patent thickets. The technical cohesion index is proposed to measure the technical cohesion of patent thickets quantitatively based on patent citations. All patent portfolios are identified by mathematical combinatorics. Then the technical cohesion of patent portfolios can be measured by the technical cohesion index to identify the existence or non-existence of patent thickets. That is a warning for subsequent innovators and users to avoid duplication of R&D and being troubled with patent thickets.
