Abstract:Geotechnical test and analysis were conducted for columnar and surface samples from more than 2000 meters depth of water in the western of South China Sea,with physical properties obtained,including nature water content,nature density,specific gravity,void ratio,liquid-plastic limit and grain-size characteristic.The results indicate that the type of sediment is clay with high water content,low density,high void ratio,high liquid-plastic limit and high clay content,which is quite different from the physical properties of sediments in offshore shallow water.Physical properties of sediment in different sampling location differ slightly,which is the same as columnar samples in different depth.The sediment belongs to a kind of highly sensitive clay with water content much larger than liquid limit,and the characteristic of high plastic index is related to the high clay content.
