Abstract: The huge amount of potential natural gas hydrate resource has a great prospect for the exploration and exploitation in the world. Recently, the mechanical properties of the sediments containing gas hydrates have been studied systematically; however, the mechanical properties of gas hydrate-bearing sediments in the Shenhu Area of the South China Sea were little investigated. In this paper, synthesized methane hydrate-ice mixtures were mixed with marine silty soil or kaolin clay to form two types of methane hydrate-bearing sediments, and ice-clay mixtures were formed by using marine and pure ice powder. Based on a series of triaxial tests, the stress-strain curves were obtained, and the similarities and differences of stress-strain behavior and strength properties between them were studied. Moreover, according to the Mohr-Coulomb strength theory, the data of the cohesive force and the internal friction angle were calculated to analyze the mechanism of the strength similarities and differences between the hydrate-ice-marine silty soil mixtures, hydrate-ice-kaolin clay mixtures, and ice-marine soil mixtures.
