Abstract:The main purpose of this paper is to research the seismic response characteristics of high earth-rockfill dam in narrow valley, using three-dimensional nonlinear dynamic elasto-plastic analysis method. The distribution of shear strain and permanent displacement is given with different coefficient of valley topography. The results showed that, the dynamic response of dam shows strong spatial three-dimensional effect of valley topography, and it also have a significant effect for shear strain and displacement. For the symmetrical valley, the distribution of shear strain is out a symmetrical oval extension, and the maximum appears at crest of the dam. When the shape factor of the length to height ratio (L / H) is relatively small, the constraint of the dam is stronger of the valley shape, the displacement increases obviously. At the same ratio (L / H), the settlement of crest dam under the wider valley is bigger than the gentler slope. These results are value for the design of high earth-rockfill dam in the narrow valley with high seismicity.
