Abstract:The influence of carbon nanofibres (CNFs)/silica fume (SF) addition on physical performance of cement mortars was investigated. CNFs were added in 0.15%, 0.25% and 0.35% by mass of cement in mortars, with constant water/cement ratio of 0.35 as well as aggregate/cement ratio of 1.5 in all samples. The mechanical properties, porosity and pore structure (MIP) as well as microstructure (SEM and EDS) of all mortar samples were examined. The test results showed that the SF addition has an dispersion effect on carbon nanofibers in cement matrix, which increased the mechanical properties of the mortar samples. The results showed that the addition of CNFs/SF increased the flexural and compressive strength of mortars, even of about 30% and 41% respectively. The addition of CNFs/ SF improved also the pore structure, and SEM analysis showed that the CNFs are forming bridges through micro-cracks and improve the interfacial transition zone in cement matrix.
