Abstract:One traditional heating system, Chinese Kang, is widely used in detached houses in rural regions of Northern China, which utilizes the renewable energy as the heat source, like corn stalks, straws and energy plants,. The objective of this paper is to simulate the energy performance of Chinese detached house with the Kang regarding indoor climate. Here, a new constructed Chinese detached house was used as a prototype for the simulation in the rural region of Shenyang, one city in Northeast China. The simulation boundary conditions are set close to the physical conditions of real house. The building energy and climate simulation software IDA-ICE was used to construct the Kang heating model and to simulate the performance of the Chinese Kang. The results show that the simulation can obtain a good agreement with earlier studies. The Kang model constructed by the IDA-ICE could be used to simulate the heating performance of the Kang system and to calculate the energy consumption in the whole detached house. The thermal environment in Chinese detached houses is still poor during the severe cold winter with only Kang for heating the whole house. The corresponding methodologies and standards for the high quality detached houses in Chinese rural regions should be developed to guide constructors and house owner.
