Abstract: ZrB2 particles were introduced into the carbon/phenolic composites by immersion, and the ablative performance and thermal insulation property of carbon/phenolic composites with different ZrB2 particle percents were acquired by oxygen-acetylene ablation experiments. The results indicate that the linear ablation rate of carbon/phenolic composite with ZrB2 decreases with the increase of ZrB2 content, and it reaches a minimum value of 0.0052 mm/s at 9% of ZrB2 content. By contrast, the linear ablation rate creeps slightly when the percent of ZrB2 content maintains increase. In addition, the carbon/phenolic composite insulation performance is the optimal at 9% of ZrB2 content. Introducing ZrB2 into the carbon/phenolic composites could improve the ablation performance and the insulation property. It may provide an advanced method for optimizing design of carbon/phenolic composite materials and structures.
