Abstract:This paper studied the decomposition of high concentration pentachlorophenol (PCP) loaded on granular activated carbon (GAC) by ozone (O(3)). The effects of operating factors such as O(3) concentration, treatment time and water content of GAC on degradation efficiency of PCP were investigated. The results showed that the degradation efficiency of PCP increased with the ozone concentration as well as the treatment time. Furthermore, the higher water content of GAC was more effective for degradation of PCP due to increasing center dot OH radicals from ozone decomposition. The study can provide some useful information as to degradation of other refractory biodegradable organic contaminants by ozonation.
