Abstract:The safety and integrity of nuclear power plant (NPP) containments must be guaranteed during the plant’s lifecycle, especially in the event of severe earthquake and aircraft crashes. Base isolation, as a seismic isolation measure which can effectively reduce the seismic responses of the superstructure and prevent structural damage, draws much attention in the design and construction of nuclear power stations both at present and in the future. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the impacts of large commercial aircraft on the containment in the design of isolation systems for nuclear power plants. This paper studied and analyzed the isolation performance from decreasing amplitude ratio (DAR) and the maximum horizontal displacement of the containment on the basis of the CPR1000 containment with different types of high damping rubber bearing installed under the base mat. Moreover, it also conducted safety assessment of the containment with seismic isolation combined using the load time history method with taking the impact load of A320 commercial aircraft as an example. The primary results of the aircraft impact focused on the vibration characteristics of the vibration attenuation process and the acceleration response spectrum of the aircraft impact induced vibration processes. © 2018, Engineering Mechanics Press.
