Analysis of liquid sloshing in half-full horizontal elliptical tanks by a scaled boundary finite element method

摘要:The scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM) is a novel semianalytical technique, combining the advantages of the finite element and the boundary element methods with unique properties of its own. In this paper, the SBFEM is firstly extended to study the natural sloshing frequencies of transverse modes in a half-filled non-deformable horizontal cylindrical container of elliptical cross section, and the effects of surface-piercing or bottom-mounted vertical baffles on the container is considered. Based on linear potential theory, a variational principle formulation is used to derive the SBFEM equation. The SBFEM need discretize only the boundary with surface finite-elements and keeps the radial differential equation solved completely analytically. The results show that the present method has strong ability to resolve singularity problems analytically by choosing the scaling centre at the singular point. Meanwhile, a study is also performed to demonstrate the remarkably small computational cost.
