Abstract:Faults often happened in underground engineering practice, especially within a long-distance tunnel. The instability and failure of tunnel structure is mostly found to be closely related to concealed fault, which not only affects the stability of tunnel during construction, but also affects the long-term stability for operation. In this paper, the RFPA strength reduction method was applied to investigate the influence of the distribution of a concealed fault on the long-term stability of tunnel. The results show that the distribution of concealed fault has great influence on the stress and displacement field in the adjacent zone of the tunnel. The relationship between fault distribution and the displacement of tunnel periphery has been established and the corresponding failure mechanism of tunnel was discussed. © 2008 Taylor & Francis Group.
