Abstract: In this paper, a macro-model and a micro-model are established to analyze the flow field in a straight micro-channel and a curved micro-channel, respectively. The macro-model is presented based on a convection-diffusion equation, and is used to analyze the variation of concentration in a straight channel. According to the calculation results of the flow field for different Peclet numbers (Pe), this macro-model has been shown to be efficient in calculating the concentration field as compared with reported models. A finite element model is established as the micro-model to simulate the flow field in a curved channel. By combining the macro-model with the micro-model, the concentration variation in a certain microfluidic channel network can be evaluated simply. To evaluate the macro-micro-model, an E shape micro-channel was fabricated in a PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) substrate by micro-milling, and sealed using a PMMA cover plate to enclose the microchannel. Mixing experiments were conducted with this device. The concentration observed in the straight channel, which is used to connect two E units, agrees with the calculation results produced by the macro-model. It can be demonstrated that this macro-micro-model should facilitate the design of microfluidic device with sophisticated channel networks. Copyright ? 2010 Binary Information Press.
