Abstract:This paper puts forward an optical fiber force-testing ring based on fiber-optic white light interferometry. This sensor employed a sensing fiber, which was circled on the external surface of elastomer to measure the expansion caused by force and temperature. The expansion was measured by the Michelson interferometer which could measure a deformation in an arbitrary length of the sensing fiber with 5 micrometers resolution. Firstly, the experimental results have shown that the temperature effect is almost the same whenever the sensor is restrained or in a free state. Secondly, in order to compare the white-light interference sensor with FBG sensor in the same specimen of the test, the calibration experiments of sensor was conducted in the laboratory. The results demonstrates white-light interference sensor have an advantage in precision and measuring the average strain of elastomer. This provides a high-precision, low-cost method for measuring the cable force on the bridge. ? 2017 Taylor & Francis Group, London.
