Abstract: Sn-SnOx/Carbon composite material was prepared by a carbothermal method wherein carbonisation of mixture of tin oxide (SnO2) and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na) at 450 C resulted in the simultaneous formation of carbon and Sn-SnOx nano-particles. The composite material was characterized by XRD, SEM/EDS, BET and electrochemical tests. Nano-particles of Sn-SnOx were well dispersed inside the formed carbon composite by the SEM images. The electrochemical tests showed that the initial reversible capacity as high as 600 mAh/g was obtained at a charge-discharge current density of 100 mA/g. Moreover, good cycle performance of the electrode was achieved that high capacity of ca. 376 mAh/g was kept even after 50 cycles of charge-discharge.
