Abstract:In order to satisfy the requirements of structural and functional applications, tailoring microstructures and improving oxidation resistance of C/C-SiC is essential. In this study, microstructure tailoring is achieved by pretreatment of fiber at 1500 degrees C in a nitrogen atmosphere. It is found that the pre-treatment of carbon fibers increases the mass fraction of the SiC matrix in composites, the distribution of the SiC matrix becomes homogenous, and the fine-grained SiC layer enwraps the fibers forming the dense shell. Thermo-gravimetric measurements indicate that microstructural tailoring by fiber treatment can significantly improve the oxidation resistance of C/C-SiC composites, attributed to the high mass fraction and the homogenous distribution of the SiC matrix.
