Abstract:Active shape control of flexible wings using smart composite materials can improve its aeroelastic response and flight control performance. In this study, a type of smart composite material called macro-fiber-composite (MFC) is used for actuation to achieve dynamic roll maneuver of UAV with active morphing wings. This study focuses on the automatic morphing wing system design with a closed-loop controller to track reference dynamic roll rate trajectory. The aeroelastic model of wing with piezoelectric actuating under external aerodynamic loads is established and the model is integrated into roll control loop. A low order state-space representation of the multidisciplinary system is developed to facilitate controller design. A time varying linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) tracking controller is designed to achieve the desired dynamic roll rate responses. Some simulations and results are presented to validate the effectiveness of the developed roll rate tracking system with active wings using multi MFC actuators. © 2016 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.
