Abstract: In this study, we propose a novel way to analyze the geographical distribution of the global innovation activities. Using 59.64 million article views and downloads to 23.8 thousand scientific papers published by Frontiers, we analyze the worldwide distribution of innovation activities, the knowledge diffusion embodied with different visiting patterns to new or old scientific papers. We find that most innovation activities are concentrated around major metropolitan areas. In most cases, the publishing areas and a few cities are the diffusing source of scientific knowledge, and there exists the diffusing route from the publishing cities to a broader area.
