  • Abstract:The soil skeleton stress is defined to be soil skeleton internal force due to the external forces excluding pore fluid pressure. Taking the soil skeleton, pore water and pore air as independent body for equilibrium analysis, we build equilibrium equations for each phase. By comparing with the equilibrium equation of total stress after adding up the equilibrium equation of each phase, obtain the relationship of total stress, skeleton stress, pore water pressure and pore air pressure, which is considered to be the soil skeleton stress equation, equivalent to Terzaghi's effective stress equation for saturated soils. Therefore, a unified effective stress equation that is applicable both for saturated and unsaturated soils is obtained and the physical basis of the equation is the balance of internal force of a soil. A unified theory of soil mechanics for saturated soils and unsaturated soils could be developed based on the unified effective stress equation.
