Abstract:In this paper, an automatic digital image processing method is presented for the entire surface deformation measurement of unsaturated soil specimen in triaxial tests. The traditional triaxial cell was redesigned to fit for image measurement, together with two reflection mirrors situated inside the triaxial cell, a 360 - coverage of specimen's deformation could be achieved. By this method, deformation field and strain field of specimen's surface at any timepoint can be obtained. Possible error sources of the measurement system were analzed and accuracy of this method was quantified by other means of higher precision. Comparisons were made between the observed volumetric strains of soil specimens both from image processing and conventional measurement techniques, and the results showed good agreement. Finally, advantage of this method in analyzing both axial and radial deformation of unsaturated soil specimen was indicated through a series of suction-controlled triaxial tests. ? 2014 Taylor & Francis Group.
