Abstract:Four specimens were tested to investigate the behaviour of large-scale concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns under concentric local compression. The effects of the section type and the top endplate thickness are examined under the same local compression area ratio. The test results showed that, the circular specimens had a higher bearing capacity than the square specimens, and the thicker the top endplate, the higher was the bearing capacity of the specimens. The theoretical model was developed based on software package ABAQUS, and the predicted load versus deformation relations and bearing capacities generally agreed well with the tested results. Finally, the existed simplified formulae were used to calculate the bearing capacity of locally loaded large-scale CFST columns.
