Abstract:It has been through 60 years ever since the eminent grain refining performance of Al-5Ti-B for aluminum alloys was found. Owing to the high temperature and distransparency of aluminum alloys during solidification, however, no direct study of the growth kinetics regarding the solidification process of inoculated aluminum alloys has been reported. This work was undertaken to study the effect of Al-5Ti-B addition on the dendrite growth of Al-Cu alloy. The third generation synchrotron radiation source at Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF) was utilized for real-time imaging. The results have demonstrated that nucleation ceases after recalescence. Under the same cooling condition, the growth rate of dendrite was deceased markedly when Al-5Ti-B was added into the Al-Cu alloy. Without Al-5Ti-B addition, the growth rate of -Al dendrite first increases and then decreases, reaching a maximum of 50 m/s, whilst with Al-5Ti-B addition, this rate remains almost a same value of some 0.8 m/s.
