Abstract:In triaxial tests, end effect has a direct influence on the properties such as stress distribution and deformation. So it is the factor that cannot be ignored. Software of ABAQUS is used in this paper to simulate the contact action between the testing machine and ends of clay test specimen during the test. Stress-strain relationship is calculated respectively by setting the condition that the ends are completely restrained and completely free. According to the analysis, the influence of end effect decreases with increasing distance away from the ends of specimen and the influence is minimum in the middle. For the standard clay three-axis sample of 39.1mm x80mm, the influence of end effect can be lessened by analyzing 1/3 zone in the middle of the sample, but the influence cannot be eliminated completely. During calculation and analysis, the stress of 1/3 surface is different from that of the top surface, and so the force applied to the clay test specimen should be deducted to 90% to calculate 1/3 zone in the middle of test specimen. By this way, we can eliminate the influence of end effect. ? 2012 ejge.
