Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to discuss the tensile crack propagation depth of unsaturated expansive soils (Yang et al. 2006) further. Reduced coefficient of effective cohesion is put forward, which considers the reduction of effective cohesion when cracks exit. Results show that the reduced coefficient of effective cohesion affects the crack propagation depth and the critical matrix suction at the ground surface significantly. For given effective cohesion, the crack propagation depth decreases as the reduced coefficient of effective cohesion increases. When reduced coefficient of effective cohesion is zero, the maximum values are obtained. The critical matrix suction at the ground surface has a linear relationship with reduced coefficient of effective cohesion.
