Abstract:Based on the CCD image technique, a method for analyzing the motion responses of moving objects is proposed. This method is composed of four steps: (1) image collection via a CCD camera; (2) image scanning for tracing points; (3) coordinate transformation; (4) data analysis. The validity of the method was verified through a specific experiment. To realize automation, the technique was integrated into our software and successfully applied to the analysis of the motion responses in sea-cage model tests. Experimental results show that the horizontal maximum velocities of the floating cage system under different wave conditions are much smaller than those of the wave particles. On the other hand, the vertical maximum velocities, under the same conditions, are greater than those of wave particles. Furthermore, the results reveal that waves have a relatively small effect on net deformation in the gravity cage. Nevertheless, the cage suffers from severe volume loss under current conditions, even using a heavy weight system. The CCD image technique, proposed here, is a reliable and efficient approach for the study of motion responses of moving objects, such as ships and sea cages. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V.
