Abstract: A method using preparative high performance liquid chromatography ( HPLC) to isolate two individial alkaloids from cells of Camptotheca acuminata Decaisne was investigated. A preparative C-18 column was employed in the procedure. By isocratic elution with acetonitrile-water (35:65, V/V) as mobile phase at a flow rate of 5 mL/min, two alkaloids were obtained and subsequently were indetified by ultraviolet, infrared and mass spectroscopic methods as isocamptothecin A and isocamptothecin B. HPLC analytical results showed that the purity of each alkaloid was over 97%. Under the chromatographic conditions, every peak was completely baseline separated and consumption of solvents was low.
