Abstract:The manufacturing industry has faced more challenges in recent years with the rise of sustainable development. Since cutting is a common machining method in manufacturing industry, the performance of cutting tools has become a critical issue. Fabricate texture on the surface of cutting tools is an advanced technology which can improve the cutting performance, thus improve the surface quality of substrate and prolong the life of cutting tools. Relevant research has shown that textured tools can reduce the contact length of tool-chip and improve the friction conditions, which results in reducing the cutting force and cutting temperature. In addition, because of the function of lubricant storage by the textures, minimal quantity lubrication can be achieved which leads to more environmentally friendly process. Therefore, the problems of excessive cutting heat and serious pollution can be alleviated by using textured tools. This paper presents a systematically review on recent progress in the field of textured cutting tools, including the technologies used in fabricating textures and the cutting mechanism of textured tools. Besides, the effects of surface texture on tool performance, cutting performance and machined surface quality as well as the application of textured cutting tools are summarized. Finally, the future trends of textured tools are forecasted. This study provides a reference for futher in-deep study of textured tools. © 2021 Journal of Mechanical Engineering.
