Numerical prediction of gas bubbles formation on porous anode in Hall-Hroult cells based on lattice Boltzmann method

摘要:The aluminum electrolysis cells in operation generate a large amount of gas of which the decomposition is mainly dominated by the gas anodic products, CO2 (90%). An important amount of gas fluorides is released from the bath's evaporation and a few parasites reactions between the anodic carbon and the bath fluoride. The cells can be roughly divided into three vertical reactive zones. The first one, comprised of the anode carbon and the cryolitic bath rich of fluorinated and atmospheric gases, is considered in this paper to study the formation and behavior of gas in cells. At macroscopic scale, the gas can be modelled initially from the nucleation of gas bubbles with the porous anode surface using the Shan-Chen model, which is taken as quasi-homogeneously distributed. A given cryolite bath is modelled by a two-phase fluid flow (bath and immiscible gas) interacting with a porous surface.
