Abstract:In this work, a flexible MIMO antenna system with polarization and pattern diversities has been proposed for wearable applications. The antenna has only one conducting layer and is easy to integrate in the clothing. Characteristic mode theory was utilized to design and analyze the performance of the antennas before full wave simulations. The compact MIMO antenna with the size of 38.1 mm x 38.1 mm was fabricated on the felt with the thickness of 2 mm. It operates over a wide band and has been verified to be robust when in close proximity to the human body and not sensitive to the bending and body movement. Fairly good antenna gains of 1.6 dB and 1.2 dB and diversity capability ensure reliable wearable communication links between the proposed antenna system and other devices. The proposed antenna is competitive for wearable applications, due to its compact size, single layer structure, easy integration, robustness, and reasonable on-body antenna gain.
Hui Li was born in Heilongjiang province, China. She received the B.E. degree in optical engineering from Tianjin University (TJU), China, in 2007 and Ph.D degree in electrical engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Sweden, in 2012. She is currently an associate professor at Dalian University of Technology. Research Interests:Multiple input multiple output systems, millimeter wave antenna, implantable antnena, RFID, theory of characteristic mode and etc.
