Influence of cavern space on stability of large cavern groups under earthquakes

摘要:Many factors influence the stability of large cavern groups of the hydropower stations. Cavern space is an important factor that should be considered in practical engineering. In order to study the influence of cavern space on the stability of large cavern groups under earthquake loadings, three dynamic time-history simulation models of large cavern groups were set up. To fully consider the dynamic feature of rock mass, a damaged plasticity model with a non-associated potential flow was adopted for rock mass and lining. Simulated results indicate that if the space is less than one cavern characteristic length, the dynamic responses of large cavern groups are significantly different from that of a single cavern. The adjacent caverns hardly affected each other once the space approached or exceeded twice the cavern characteristic length. The conclusions could be used as a primary guidance to the anti-earthquake design for practical engineering.
