Abstract:An important factor in the design of an offshore gravity structure is the action of wave induced pore-water pressure exerted on the base of the structure. The objective of this paper is to analyze the pore-water pressure in the seabed beneath a two dimensional gravity structure. The seabed is assumed to consist of homogeneous and isotropic sand with a finite depth. Under the sand bed is an incompressible and impermeable boundary. The theory used in this paper is based on Biot's theory which takes into account the compressibility of both the soil skeleton and the water. The unknown variables in Biot's equations are displacements of the soil and pore-water pressure. It is difficult to solve the coupled equations with all these variables. The displacements of soil are therefore eliminated from the momentum equation of pore-water and the momentum equation of soil skeleton. Finally, the governing equation for the pore-water pressure is obtained.
