Abstract:Ice dynamic loads on offshore structures are determined by structural parameters (size, stiffness, type, etc.) and ice conditions (ice thickness, strength, velocity, etc.). In this study, the ice loads on narrow conical offshore structures are simulated with the discrete element model (DEM), In this model, spherical particles with parallel bonds are adopted to model the level ice. The bonding strength between ice particles is set as a function of ice salinity and temperature. The pile structures have a mass with stiffness and damping coefficient. The influences of the conical pile slopes on ice load are analyzed. The results show that the ice load increases with increasing conical slopes. The ice-induced structural vibrations are also calculated and compared well with model tests. Finally, further studies on the contact force model and input parameters are recommended for improving the DEM application in ice dynamic load simulation.
