Abstract:The interactions between drifting pancake ice floes and moored ship are simulated with the Discrete Element Model (DEM). The pancake ice floes are modelled with three-dimensional discrete elements by considering the buoyancy, drag force and added mass of current. The ship hull is constructed with combined discrete elements via certain overlaps. The interaction between ice floe and ship hull is determined through element contact detection and impact force calculation. With the discrete element method above, the dynamic ice forces on ship hull are simulated under various ice velocities, thicknesses, floe sizes and concentrations, respectively. It shows that the ice load increases with increasing current velocity, ice concentration and ice thickness. The present work can be consulted for the ship structure design and the safe navigation in ice field.
