Abstract:Soil-rock mixture is a special engineering geological material,which is
   composed of rock with high strength and soil with low strength,whose
   mechanical characteristics can be directly investigated by direct shear
   tests.In this paper,we adopted spherical elements to represent soil
   material,and irregular overlapped clumps to represent the rock rubble
   with Discrete Element Model(DEM).The shear strength of soil-rock mixture
   was obtained from direct shear tests based on DEM simulation with
   different rock contents and inter-element bonding strengths of soil
   particles.The results showed that the shear strength of soil-rock
   mixture increases with the increase of either the rock content or the
   bonding strength.Moreover, the internal friction angle and the cohesive
   strength of soil-rock mixture were determined by DEM simulation with
   various rock contents.The above results are beneficial to reveal the
   shear strength of soil-rock mixture.
