Antifouling Coatings
Marine biological fouling is one of the main challenges in marine engineering, which cccelerate hull corrosion and slow down the speed of the vessel and increase fuel consumption. Therefore, antifouling coatings become one of the focuses in marine engineering. The interdisciplinary research includes electrochemistry, materials science, biology and microbiology.
Metal-based Biomaterials
The corrosion in vivo is one of the challenges in metal-based biomaterials. Coatings are one of the most common methods to improve the corrosion resistance of metal-based biomaterials including magnesium alloy and nickel-titanium alloy. Moreover, the multifunctional coatings enhance the biocompatibility, antibacterial property simultaneously. The interdisciplinary research includes electrochemistry, materials science, medicine and microbiology.
Carbon Dots for Medical Applications
Carbon dots are novel nanomaterials which were first synthesized in 2004 in USA and the study of carbon dots become hot as the Nobel Prize was awarded to scientists for their attribution in quantum dots (which include carbon dots) in 2023. Carbon dots, possessing excellent photoluminescence property and biocompatibility, can be synthesized from various carbon sources including biomass, which makes them potential biomaterials for medical applications. However, the study is still at the beginning. The interdisciplinary research includes chemistry, materials science, medicine and microbiology.

Tianxiao Wang, the assistant professor, obtained his doctoral degree from Jilin University, China in 2023. Then, he worked as a postdoc at Umeå University, Sweden from 2023 to 2025. His research interests include anti-fouling coating, microbiological influenced corrosion and biomedical materials especially magnesium alloy based biomaterials. He have published over 10 papers on journals including Journal of Magnesium Alloys, Progess of Organic Coatings and Ceramisc International and so on. The students who are interested in corrosion resistant coatings and biomaterials are welcomed.
