Abstract: To mitigate the punch-through failure potential of spudcan foundations for jack-up rigs on layered soils, skirted footings are increasingly being considered. This study investigated the bearing capacity responses of spudcans and skirted footings penetrating into sand over clay soils. Both centrifuge tests and large deformation finite element (LDFE) simulations were conducted. The results indicated that, by comparing with the bearing capacity response of a penetrating spudcan, a skirted footing displayed the ability to reduce the potential of punch-through failure of a foundation on sand over clay soils. ? 2010 by The International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers (ISOPE).
