Abstract:Due to the weak constraints, the fibers in surface layers of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) are very vulnerable to excessive out-of-plane bending deformation in edge trimming, which always induces undesirable surface damages. Aiming at solving such problems, focusing on a kind of high-performance tool: the multitooth cutter, this study proposes a novel structural optimization method, which for the first time considers the specific influences of the cutter's structure on out-of-plane bending degree of surface fibers in edge trimming of CFRP. Through cutters fabrication and experimental verification, it is found that the multitooth cutter whose right-handed micro cutting edges and left-handed micro cutting edges are arranged alternatively in cutter's circumferential direction has obvious advantage in suppressing the surface damages in edge trimming of CFRP compared to other multitooth cutters which do not meet the proposed method, regardless of machining parameters. Such findings could make great contributions in perfecting the structure for CFRP-specialized cutting tools.
