We are looking for a good PhD student:

University: The University of Manchester, UK

PhD supervisor: Professor Zhongdong Wang (Zhongdong Wang - Research Explorer The University of Manchester)

PhD title: Characterization of Vacuum Arc-Surface Interaction in High-Voltage Circuit Breakers through Optical Measurement Methods

Project outline:

Vacuum circuit breakers (VCBs) are gaining prominence in high-voltage applications as alternatives to SF6-based switching technologies. It is perceived as the ultimate technological solution to eliminate the use of greenhouse gas of SF6. However, achieving higher operating voltages remains a significant challenge for VCBs. A deeper understanding of arc characteristics and arc erosion mechanisms are essential for advancing the circuit breaker design. This research aims to design the experimental setup to observe arc root and cathode spot development. Techniques including optics observation, temperature measurement, and material test will be incorporated to characterize the arc-surface interaction, so that an analytical model is established to describe the relationship between contact material and arcing performances in VCBs. Insights from this analysis will support the development of high voltage VCBs for a net-zero electrical network.

We are looking for an academic excellent and hardworking MSc or BSc graduate who has relevant experience and want to study overseas for a PhD degree. The University of Manchester, UK is ranked highly in the world university ranking (QS 35th 2026) and is renowned for its Electrical Power research area.

The scholarship is to cover the 3 years international tuition fees plus UKRI level stipends, sufficient for a promising PhD student to fully concentrate on his/her PhD research. In addition, the research group will also provide amble opportunities to attend international academic and industrial conferences.

Any candidate interested in this scholarship can contact zhongdong.wang@manchester.ac.uk.
