Abstract: 1,3-Propanediol (1,3-PD) is an important raw material which is widely used in pharmaceutical , chemi-cal, food and cosmetic industries .As a promising monomer for the synthesis of poly ( trimethylene terephthalate ) ( PTT) , its market demand is increasing linearly .Based on the demand of safe and eco-friendly production process and sustainable development , microbial conversion of renewable resources into 1,3-PD has been paid more and more attention.In this paper, we will discuss 1,3-PD producers with relation to their metabolism and fermentation technolo-gies, as well as the downstream processing of biologically produced 1,3-PD.The prospects and challenges for the in-dustrial production of bio-based 1,3-PD are also presented.
