Abstract:Several methods for the electromagnetic separation of nonmetallic inclusions from an aluminum melt were analyzed and compared. The migration rate of inclusion particles for each method, such as DC electric field with steady magnetic field, AC magnetic field, AC electric field, was derived and compared with the gravity settling velocity. Effects of the radius of circular pipe and frequency on the inclusion removal efficiency were ascertained for each case. It is found that the removal efficiency for three methods increases with the current and acting time, conversely, decreases with the pipe radius. As far as the removal of small inclusions is concerned, the AC magnetic method is a favorable one because its removal efficiency has less dependence upon the particle size.
