Abstract:Dalian Municipality is composed of Dalian City and its surrounding areas, which includes four satellite towns. The characteristics of municipal solid waste (MSW) and municipal solid waste management (MSWM) in these satellite towns are presented in the current paper. Food waste was the dominant component in all cases, accounting for 29% to 67% of MSW. The per capita daily MSW generation rates of the four towns varied greatly, ranging from 0.95 to 2.86 kg.day(-1). However, the average per capita MSW generation rate of the four towns in 2008 was 1.11 kg.day(-1), which was comparable to that of Dalian City (1.07 kg.day(-1)). The MSWM in the four towns of Dalian Municipality was relatively simple, with old-fashioned and open-air garbage bins and waste transfer vehicles. The terminal disposal method for MSW was mainly simple landfilling. Only two towns besides Dalian City had their own sanitary landfill sites.
