Abstract:The section of an overhead crane's girder was optimized using evolutionary structural optimization method which was based on elements' stress. The rectangular section was got. Main and secondary web of the girder were optimized by variable density method. According to the results, the truss structure was adopted in the secondary web instead of its shell structure and the main one remained unchanged. Considering the strength and stiffness for new girder, it's weight can be reduced greatly. A feasible approach for the lightweight design of girder is proposed.
