Abstract:There are many limitations for polyethylene (PE)carrier, such as slow biofilm formation, low activity of the attached biofilm and poor wastewater treatment performance. It is demonstrated that the hydrophilicity of the PE carrier can be improved by doping diatomite and that the contact angle of the diatomite-modified carrier decreases to 77.8°from 94.3°of the PE carrier.Compared with the PE carrier, the diatomite-modified carrier has higher concentrations of both protein and polysaccharide in the attached biofilm under the same conditions during the start-up period of the moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR ) process, which indicates that the attached biofilm on the diatomite-modified carrier exhibits better biological activity. After biofilm grows mature, the total biomass in the reactor 1 (R1,filled with diatomite-modified carriers)is 35.6% higher than that in the reactor 2 (R2,filled with PE carriers),and the amount of the attached biofilm on the diatomite-modified carriers is 62.3% higher than that on the PE carriers.Additionally, during the start-up period both COD and ammonium removal of R1 are also better than those of R2,respectively.All these advantages of the diatomite-modified carrier in biofilm formation and wastewater treatment performance contribute to shortening the start-up period of the MBBR process.
