    An efficient motion estimation algorithm for H.264/AVC encoder by using new searching strategy

      摘要:Motion estimation (ME) is the most important part of H.264/AVC encoder. In order to achieve higher compression efficiency, H.264/AVC encoder adopts multiple prediction modes, multiple reference pictures and high precision of motion vector resolutions which make the motion estimation take up 60% encoding time. An efficient motion estimation algorithm by using a new searching strategy is proposed in this paper. Our experimental results show that, by aid of the new searching strategy, the improved UMHexagonS algorithm can save about 16% ME time on the tested video sequences. In particular, for video sequences with acute motion, the improved UMHexagonS algorithm can save up to 24.2% ME time without loss in image quality and sacrifice in bit-rate.
