1. Transition-metal involved nitrogen activation: several Mo catalyzed or mediated systems for the synthesis of silylamine directly from N2 were developed, including
1) Catalytic reduction of N2 into silylamine under mild condition at the Mo center with a bulky tetradentate tripod phosphine ligand
2) Reduction of N2 into silylamine under mild condition catalyzed by Mo complex with a pincer phosphine ligand. The reaction mechanism was investigated via the isolation of many key intermediates.
3) Direct convertion of N2 into silylamine with silane (Si-H) mediated by Mo complex. N≡N triple bond was cleaved in one step and the silane (Si-H) reacted as both functionalization reagent and reductant.
2. Transition-metal catalyzed organic synthesis: Cu catalyzed vinylation reactions
1) A general Cu catalyzed coupling of N-H bond of azoles with vinyl bromides
2) Cu catalyzed N-H bond vinylation of aromatic amines. Based on this, a one-pot synthesis of various substituted N-arylpyrroles was also developed.
3) Cu catalyzed tandem N-H/C-H bond vinylation of azoles, affording various azolopyridine derivatives.
4) Cu catalyzed vinylation of inorganic sulfides for the synthesis of thiophenes and dihydrothiophenes.
Dr. Qian LIAO was admitted to the Department of Chemistry of Tsinghua University in 2003. After undergraduate, he continued his Ph.D. at the Department of Chemistry of Tsinghua University in 2007, under the supervision of Professor Chanjuan XI, engaged in the research of transition-metal catalyzed organic synthesis. During the period, he went to the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in the United States for a one year visiting scholar programme in 2011. In 2012, he received his Ph.D. degree. In the same year, he went to Fundamental and Applied Heterochemistry Laboratory (LHFA) of University Toulouse III – Paul Sabatier/National Center for Scientific Research of France (CNRS) as a postdoctoral researcher until 2016 (Supervisor: Dr. Nicolas MÉZAILLES). Since 2017, he has worked at ZHANG Dayu School of Chemistry, Dalian University of Technology (DUT).
Dr. LIAO has long been committed to the research of organometallic chemistry, including copper-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction, iron-catalyzed hydrogen electrochemical oxidation reaction and molybdenum-catalyzed nitrogen reduction, and has achieved some important results, which have been published in international academic journals such as Angew. Chem., Int. Ed., ACS Catal., Org. Lett., J. Org. Chem., etc.
At present, the group mainly conducts scientific research in the field of transition-metal catalyzed dinitrogen conversion, and has received financial support from Dalian University of Technology and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). Achieving the activation and transformation of dinitrogen under ambient conditions is a major scientific problem that humans have to solve. However, owing to the special stability of dinitrogen, its conversion is very difficult, making the research in this field is also very challenging. Ph.D. students, master students, undergraduates, etc. if interested in the topics are always welcome to join the research group.
